CARLOTTA
Yager Creek
July 23, 1907: "At present Yager Creek is running in a new channel which brings its waters close up to the tracks of the railroad in the winter. Last winter the north end of the Carlotta bridge was washed from Yager Creek. Supervisor Williams has been considering the matter for some time past. It is possible that action will be taken soon whereby the railroad company and the county will unite to turn the Yager back into the old channel." (Ferndale Enterprise)
February 14, 1914: "Monday the supervisors ordered the clerk of the board to advertise for bids for the construction of a highway bridge across Yager creek near Carlotta to replace the one carried out by the last freshet. The bridge will cost approximately 110,000 and the contract will call for its completion by June, three months after the bids are opened. Surveyor Conners made measurements last week and Monday submitted plans for the bridge. The board advertised for bids to be in by February 24 and the successful bidder will be notified to commence construction work March 1. The structure will consist of two spans each 150 feet in length, with a 16-foot roadway." (Blue Lake Advocate)
February 28, 1914: "Elsemore & Jacobs will construct the new highway bridge across Yager Creek near Carlotta, the Supervisors having awarded them the contract Tuesday morning upon a bid of $7749. Work will be begun immediately. The bid submitted by Elsemore & Jacobs came as something of a surprise to the other bidder, The winners having greatly underbid the other contractors. The bids were as follows: Mercer & Fraser Construction Company, $10,445; F.H. Greed, $9405; Frank L. Smith, $9496; Elsemore & Jacobs, $7749." (Blue Lake Advocate)
February 25, 1921: "The heavy rain of last Sunday raised the streams in the northern part of the county and the low lands were flooded. The Carlotta bridge was carried away." (Ferndale Enterprise)
March 5, 1921: "Since the loss of the county bridge at Carlotta, which was carried out by the high water in Yager Creek early last week, there has been considerable agitation locally for a permanent concrete structure to replace the wooden type of bridge which has spanned the stream for a number of years. Quite a number of prominent Fortuna business men have called the attention of The Advance to the necessity which exists for a dependable crossing at Carlotta in view of the heavy traffic which has developed of late years, not only at the town itself but at many points beyond." (Blue Lake Advocate)
July 2, 1921: "Contracts for road and bridge improvements includes a new steel bridge across Yager Creek near Carlotta. The Yager bridge contract was let to Padgett and Kelly for $44,650, with an allowance of $33 per cubic yard for extra concrete. The structure to replace the bridge washed out last year."
