(LOCKEFORD)
Mokelumne River
July 30, 1880: "Editor Independent: It is much to the credit of Lockeford, and their friends in Stockton and other parts of the county, that they have raised a fund sufficient to build a bridge across the Mokelumne river opposite Lockeford. A contract has been entered into with the California Bridge Company to build a covered bridge of 130 feet span and 820 feet trestlework, to be completed within the next four months, at a cost aggregating, with the approaches, about $8,000. The bridge has been a want long felt. Lockeford, sixteen miles northeast of Stockton, is situated on the south bank of the Mokelumne, in the midst of a rich agricultural district. celebrated for its fertility and productiveness, and has a population of 300 or 400 persons. The approaches from all parts on the south side of the river are good at all times of the year, but on the north side during our winter and spring floods--say for three or four months of the year--that section of the country equally fertile with that of the south side, is almost completely isolated, and intercourse with the postoffice, stores and mechanic shops of Lockeford cut off except at a long and roundabout way of several miles.
By building this bridge the public will be equally accommodated, as it will open up a level and direct thoroughfare to the northeastern part." G.C. Holman, July 29." (Stockton Independent)
